What elements determine how much impact a building has on the environment? If things like roofing, insulation, and energy-efficient windows are among the first things that come to mind, you’re not wrong — but you also don’t have the complete picture. Product Lifecycle Management: What businesses need to know

In any kind of production process, whether the end product is a washing machine or a piece of software, there are a number of stages to go through. From the initial idea, through design to manufacturing, service and support, and end of life and disposal, all products go through a similar lifecycle. Product lifecycle management is about integrating the staff, data, processes and business systems that go to produce a product. This in turn provides a fund of information surrounding the creation of the product which can be used to streamline the development of future products. PLM software allows this to be done cost effectively across the entire lifecycle of a product.

Dutch scientists at Delft University of Technology have designed a new type of “self-healing” concrete. Limestone-producing bacteria allow this bio-concrete to seal itself when cracks appear. Developer Henk Jonkers incorporates capsules of the bacteria, as well as calcium lactate, in the concrete. When cracks occur, the exposure to air and moisture causes the bacteria to consume the calcium lactate, converting it to calcite, which seals the cracks. The bacteria can lay dormant in the concrete for up to 200 years.
