LCiP Awards 2016 Basque Country
Four companies were awarded at the LCiP Awards Ceremony 2016 in the Basque Country which took place on June 16 in Bilbao. Impact Acoustic System, ZIV Metering Solutions, Financiera Maderera and Protec are good examples of environmental, social and economic improvement.
For the four categories: SME, large enterprise, construction and energy sectors, different aspects were assessed, such as the life cycle approach applied, the concrete results of the project, the impact on company’s policy, innovation, replicability and the potential with regard to its impact to moving towards a circular economy.
For the Construction Category
The awarded company was Impact Acoustic System S.L. which has developed a patent of a sound insulation system. It is an innovation in the construction of floors and roofs, and a breakthrough in the commitment to the environment oriented to new construction and rehabilitation. “Impact” is a product composed mainly of wood and 100% recyclable organic sustainable raw materials. In addition, final product manufacture, transportation and installation, carry very low energy consumption. The project involved the development of a Comparative Life Cycle Analysis to understand its environmental benefits compared to other acoustic systems. In addition, IMPACT is undertaking the development of an Environmental Product Declaration for further certification.
For the Energy Category
In the energy sector, the LCiP Award was for ZIV Metering Solutions for the eco-redesign in collaboration with IBIL, of the recharging post for electric vehicles. This is a smart charger for electric vehicles for public road that enables fleet management recharging or multiple users, adapting load levels based on network demand and thus optimizing energy use. For the eco-redesign, ZIV and IBIL performed the LCA of the original design based on ISO 14040 and 14044 standards and then for the eco-redesign the following objectives were pursued: reducing the environmental impact, reducing the number of parts and the variety of materials, removal of adhesives, extending the life of the equipment, improving security for users and increasing modularity. The new model has reduced CO2 emissions by more than 15% and the depletion of the ozone layer by 40%. The production cost is higher, but has a decreased cost in managing stock, and primarily in maintenance costs and extended lifespan.
For the Large Company Category
In the large company category, FINANCIERA MADERERA was the winner of the LCiP Award for its product FIMAPAN H EZ which is a chipboard particle board wood. The company was established more than 80 years ago and its dedicated to timber products, being one of the leading companies in Europe.
Specifically, the EPD of the FIMAPAN H EZ, has confirming that wood is a material that retains the GHG uptake throughout the production process. Furthermore, as for Indoor Air Quality,FIMAPAN H EZ CARB certification has phase II which involves very low emissions of formaldehyde. FIMAPAN H EZ is an innovative product, which has developed an analysis of their life cycle, with the aim of stimulating internal continuous environmental improvement of the product. FINANCIERA MADERERA integrated into its products recycled raw materials from other industries material. In addition the end-of-life goes through the following stages:
• Reuse: in a building, boards can be separated and used again for the same applications.
• Recycling: in a building, boards can be separated and incorporated as raw material in the production process, generating new boards.
• Power Generation: The boards must be reused or recycled whenever possible. If not possible then life will end by generating power in a biomass plant, always preferable to landfill.
For the SME Category
Finally, in the category of SME, Protec was the winner of the LCiP Award. Protec manufactures treated wood for outdoor use and uses PEFC certified wood, that is, that comes from forests managed according to environmental criteria required by this certification system, being integrated into the chain of custody. They have developed a life-cycle assessment of the entire production, which has improved processes when knowing each of the impacts.
They have carried out an LCA and EPD, using the criteria established by Environdec to make a rigorous analysis of the environmental impacts of the manufacturing process.
LCA results show that in terms of carbon footprint using the products Protec manufactures has much less impact in the production than other alternative materials such as concrete and steel (around 5 times and 8 times lower respectively) .
